The St. George FamilySearch Library welcomes Elder Michael Mickelson and Sister Janice Mickelson as the new Directors of the St. George Library. The Mickelson’s have been called as full-time missionaries to lead the St. George FamilySeach Library for the next three years. The Mickelsons come to us with a great deal of experience in LDS Church service and a warm and willing attitude to lead, direct and encourage Family History in the St. George area.

Elder Mickelson was born and raised on a small dairy farm in Lago, Idaho. He had two older sisters and one younger than he. He attended Idaho State Vocational School before serving a Mission to Hawaii. Upon his return, he enrolled at BYU in the school of Engineering and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in1967. He then earned his Master Degree in Engineering from Utah State University and then worked for USU the next five years managing their research farm in Vernal, Utah. In 1971 Elder Mickelson accepted a job in Redding, California with CH2M Hill, a full service engineering, construction and operations company. After a very successful 43-year career with CH2M Hill and several family moves, Elder Mickelson retired and moved to St. George, Utah with his wife, sister Mickelson to serve at the St. George FamilySearch Library. Elder Mickelson has served in several Bishoprics, in the High Council, the High Priest Group Leadership, the Young Men’s Organization and Cub Scouting.

Sister Mickelson was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and grew up in Ogden, Utah. She was the oldest of four girls and one boy. She graduated from Ogden High and then attended Weber State for one year before transferring to BYU where she majored in Home Economics and graduated in 1967. Before starting their family, Sister Mickelson taught school in the Provo area and helped  her husband get through BYU. After her son and daughter were grown, Sister Mickelson worked for IBM and Siemens while they lived in Alpine, Utah. Sister Mickelson has always loved serving in the Church and has held many different callings including ward Relief Society president on three separate occasions, Stake Relief Society Presidency, the Young Women’s organization, and she has taught Sunday school and most recently Primary.

The Mickelsons met at BYU and were married on September 2, 1966. They are the parents of two children, Ryan born in Logan, Utah and Ashley who was born in Bellevue, Washington. During the past years, the family lived in several locations from Idaho, Washington, California and Utah. They are the grandparents of seven; six boys and one girl. Their son Ryan lives with his four boys in Durango, Colorado where he is a dentist. Their daughter Ashley graduated from USU with a degree in Speech Therapy and is now a stay at home mom with her daughter and two sons. Her husband, Ken, owns his own engineering firm.

Brother and Sister Mickelson have shared their testimony that receiving this calling as Directors of the St. George FamilySearch Library is truly an answer to their prayers. They said, “It allows us to serve the Lord and to serve the people in the St George area as well as our own kindred dead. We love the Spirit in the Library and the devotion and commitment of those serving here. We love this work and feel the Spirit of Elijah on a daily basis.”
