Tips for Visiting the Family History Library

Each year thousands of people travel from throughout the world to access the wealth of genealogical resources contained at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. In many cases, it is less expensive for international visitors to come to the Family History Library than it is to travel to all all of the various archives within their own countries. Many visitors plan their family and personal vacations around their visit to the library. . . 

By visiting the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, visitors have free access to:

  • Approximately 2.4 million microfilms of historical and genealogical records
  • Nearly 400,000 books and serials
  • Twenty professional research consultants
  • More than 600 missionaries and community volunteers
  • 550 patron computers
  • 350 microfilm readers
  • Free access to online databases, including FamilySearch.org, FindMyPast.com, Ancestry.com and other popular search sites.
All of these services are free to visitors and help dramatically improve that chances that your visit will be a successful one.

Before visiting the Family History Library, it is a good idea to do your homework and come well prepared. Putting in some time before your visit will save you many hours of work while at the library and could save you a lot of potential frustration and unnecessary effort.
