Searching for Your American Indian Ancestors

Anyone doing Native American family history research understands the great challenges of finding good reliable records that document the lives of their Indian ancestors. Records are sparse and often contain only meager information at best.

Below the sample Indian Census Roll are some useful links to records collections and articles that can be found in the FamilySearch website. . .

  • Dawes Commission Enrollment Records list Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, or Seminole Indians alive in Oklahoma between 1896 and 1905.
  • Eastern Cherokee or Guion Miller Roll look for ancestors who were alive 28 May 1906, descended from Eastern Cherokees (GA NC SC TN), and not associated with any other tribe.
  • Finding Your Indian Ancestor identify the tribe, find where they lived, find tribes located there, search all the record types for your ancestor’s time period and location, find records in the FamilySearch Catalog, and search the records.
  • Family History Library Catalog Citations identifies specific record collections that are a part of the FamilySearch records collections.
  • FamilySearch Wiki Articles provide many excellent articles about North American Indian record collections that are available in FamilySearch as well as other sources.
  • Cherokee Genealogy is a 60 minute free online video presentation discussing the basic steps of doing Native American genealogical research.
