The National Library of Scotland has announced the availability of their 700 digitized Post Office Directories which span from 1773 to 1911. These directories are comparable to “city directories” of other countries. (click on "read more")

The National Library of Scotland offers this description: “The oldest volumes we have digitized were published in the late 1700s when the demand for information about the increasing number of traders, businesses and industries grew rapidly. Most of the directories were published annually. This makes them a valuable resource, especially for the years not covered by the census which, starting in 1841, was only carried out every 10 years.”
The site below allows the ability to search page by page as well as by last name, place and year. However, the downloading of an complete directory to your computer is also possible, and once downloaded (patience here it can be a bit slow), searching through the pages becomes ever so much faster from your computer than waiting for the internet to bring them forward.
If you have been researching for Scottish information, this might be a valuable resource. The directories are available at the following link: http://digital.nls.uk/directories/index.html.
